For my DESIGN RESEARCH: SPECULATION class, I undertook a speculation project that focused on the future of sleep. Using a variety of research methods, I explored how technology and society could potentially transform our relationship with sleep. I discovered that people are increasingly sacrificing sleep to pursue activities they deem important, and are more willing to use sleep assist technologies. Building on these trends, I speculated about a future where sleep could whether be nearly eliminated or be treated as a time of productivity and personal growth. To bring this possible future to life, I designed a magazine that delves into the implications of this future scenario for society.

By discussing the future possibilities of sleep, I hope to provoke thoughts on people's attitudes toward time. Saving time has always been advocated, but does having more time mean more meaning in life? Can it bring more freedom? Can it lead to more productivity?

After research, I came up with two possible technology that may change our sleep method in the future. The first one is full-dive VR which allows people to get into the metaverse through a direct connection with their brain during sleep. The other technique is  polyphasic sleep device which can help people spread whole periods of sleep into fragmented rest and compress sleep time without damage to their physical health. Both methods provide humans to have more conscious time in a day. But these two devices conflict with each other.

The magazine I designed, SLEEP DIVERSITY is a monthly magazine published by the International Sleep Association discusses sleep-related topics. The International Sleep Association was established by the United Nations and keeps neutral about the various sleep modalities and listens to multiple opinions.

The inside pages of the magazine are as follows:
