This is a project that I did during my year 0 studies for my studio class project . The goal of the project was to design and build a wooden stool which help us explore the process of designing a functional piece of furniture and bringing it to life through hands-on fabrication techniques.

To begin the project, I explored when and why we might choose a stool over a chair in our homes. Through this research, I discovered that stools are often preferred in situations where space is limited or when we need a portable and versatile seating option. With this in mind, I set out to design a stool that would be simple, light and multi-functional.

After weeks of initial sketches and prototypes, this design stood out from other ideas and I decided to bring it to the reality. The main concept is to make a stoolthat have different functions for sitting on three of its surfaces.

I chose to work with birch plywood and memory foam for the material and assembled them with Mortise and tenon structure and dowel joints without any screws.

A.

a stable low stool.

B.

a rocking stool.

C.

a tall bar stool.

Before doing the woodworking, I was concerned about the thickness of the wood sticks, so I increased it. However, after bringing the stool to life, I realized that the birch plywood was strong enough on its own, and I didn't need to worry about the thickness.

Additionally, I was worried that the cushion on one side might make it difficult to balance the stool. However, it turned out that the cushion was very lightweight, and I didn't need to worry about it affecting the stool's balance.

With these concerns out of the way, I was able to focus on refining the stool's design while keeping the minimalist style I had envisioned from the beginning.
